Sources close to Land Rover confirm that the 4x4 manufacturer is in the process of finishing designs for the upcoming Defender replacement. The 2009 model will share several mechanical and cosmetic features with the current LR3 and Range Rover Sport.
It will be a tough challenge for Land Rover to replace the current vehicle. On the other hand, drastic changes must be taken in order to take advantage of North America’s lucrative market. Land Rover stopped selling Defenders in the U.S. in 1997 due to several regulation demands.
The upcoming model, Defender II, will share many family features with the current Land Rover lineup. First, it will sit on Land Rover’s revolutionary T5 platform which serves both LR3 and Range Rover Sport.
Second, the vehicle will definitely have a V8 engine option. Although you won’t see these engines in Europe, American and rest of the world customers will be asking for it. The V8 was discontinued in early 1998. The new engine will be the current 300bhp Jaguar V8 4.4 fitted to the Range Rover HSE, LR3 and Range Rover Sport HSE.
A six or eight cylinder diesel engine will be sourced from Ford’s massive empire.
