Hallo Lowlander: here my response:
my Freely 2 TD4 with DPF has been registered beginning of August 2007, and has proofed to be very reliable so far. I have had no problems whatsoever, neither mechanicallly nor electronically. The electronic glitches reported by some owners have been corrected by Landrover through software updates, so if a used Freely 2 should be the choice of your brother-in-law he should make sure that all up-dates have been carried out.
With regard to running cost it must be clear that a SUV cannot be as ecconomical as a passenger car. But our Freely 2 compares well with its competitors. The diesel consumption is reasonable with 8,5 to 9 litres (with automatic), the insurance is (still) bearable, and the anticipated re-sale value is high. Even the annual service cost are ok with 250 to 380 EURO.
But I know that taxes in Holland are high, so I cannot judge those effects on the ecconomical holding or the Freely 2. But I assume that this will affect all SUV's, irrespective of its make.

I can fully support the opinion of Yamaha-Fan. FR 2, HSE manual transmission, registered 3.11.2007, 6752 km, 8 to 8,5 litres, no problem whatsoever; but rather expensive accessoirs.
